This is a picture of me at the construction site of KJMA 89.7 FM which is on the air as of September 1, 2007. KJMA is a C1 that covers San Antonio and the surrounding communities. My work on this project was as coordinator or project manager. The transmitter site was built by Brett Huggins who is one of the finest Broadcast Engineers that I have ever worked with and the studio was built by Randy Young out of Houston. This was a great project; Guadalupe Radio Network was able to purchase the station and upgrade it from a Class A to a C1 and cover nearly 2 million listeners in South Texas with the truth of the Catholic and Apostolic faith.
We had lots of challenges on this project… as soon as construction started at the transmitter site we had rain for forty days! We could not take delivery of the steal or move the building, bring in telephone lines or much of anything else. Once we were able to get the steal on site and get the tower crew out there and begin to stack the sections we realized that many of the section were damaged and needed to be replaced. We finally got the replacement sections… but the tower crew boss (owner) died- may God rest his soul. Bret lined up another tower crew and got back to work stacking the tower.
Well we got the pieces in place and the majority of the work complete so we decided to put KJMA on the air at 50% for testing and man-o-man did it sound great! Couple of weeks later we received our License to Cover and went to 100,000 watts of Catholic Radio.
The only other Class C station that I have worked on was KXXQ in New Mexico which Immaculate Heart Radio acquired to light up a network of translators out there. But KXXQ was built on the cheap by a guy who had no intention of ever running it… KJMA was built with pride so it has really been a joy to turn KJMA on. And having worked on two Class C stations, one built poorly and the other done right, I have learned a good deal about where you can and where you can’t (shouldn’t) save money and time.
